But the land of Kerala was inhabitable due to extreme salinity of soil and a land was infected by extremely poisonous snakes.

Lord Shiva advised Lord Parashurama to spread the flaming poison of the serpents to control the salinity of the land, but this could only be done upon worshiping of the Nagaraja. To do so Lord Parashurama sent out disciples in search of a deserted jungle, and they found a suitable place near the seashore of Southern Kerala. There Lord Parashurama constructed a Theerthasthala (Manarsala Temple) for the performance of his presence.

Appearance of Nagaraja
Pleased by the making of Manarsala Temple, Lord Nagaraja appeared in front of Lord Parashurama and granted his wish. Upon his order ferocious serpents arrived and spread their flaming poison (called Kalkapuda poison) onto the land of Kerala, desalinating the soil and filling it with lush greenery, after which Lord Parashurama requested Nagaraja to bells the land of Kerala with his eternal presence and Nagaraja accepted this request with pleasure.

From that day till now the Manarsala temple is visited by devotees to worship to Lord Nagaraja in the hope of getting their wishes granted.
